Various Questions

The following is a small list of questions I've pondered from time to time when it comes to the Sailor Moon universes. While plenty of Sailor Moon fans have noted many plot holes and so forth, I often wonder about behind the scene things. If I could ask a few questions to Naoko Takeuchi or the people behind the original Sailor Moon anime of the 1990s, these would be them:

Who was the first Sailor Moon?

Was Queen Serenity Sailor Moon before she took the throne or was Sailor Moon only known to first exist in the 20th Century? From what the series shows in both the manga and anime, Usagi underwent a long journey as a Sailor Soldier before she took reign as Neo Queen Serenity. During that time she learned to fight, use inner powers as well as properly weild the Silver Crystal. Then during her reign, her daughter eventually matured enough to possess powers as well and became Sailor Chibi Moon and once she was fully grown she'd take up the mantle of Sailor Moon.

Therefore... was Queen Serenity once Sailor Moon? Was the reason Princess Serenity never became Sailor Moon in the past because just how peaceful the times were, thus the queen didn't feel she needed to learn how to become a soldier? Usagi couldn't have just out of the blue been able to become a Sailor Soldier. In any case, if Queen Serenity was once Sailor Moon, I'd love to see her uniform.

How did Haruka and Michiru awake in the Manga?

How did Haruka and Michiru meet and awaken in the manga? While there is an entire episode provided in the anime, was that completely created by Toei Animation, or did Naoko Takeuchi come up with the idea? Maybe it was a joint effort? If the former, though... what would Takeuchi have come up with? In regard to the anime, Michiru woke before Haruka did, but when it came to her nightmares and visions, who was beckoning her? Did she see a visage of Sailor Uranus? Maybe it was Sailor Pluto?

Were Princess Uranus and Neptune Lovers in the Past?

Were Haruka and Michiru lovers in their past lives? I never questioned that before, because it was hinted quite strongly that they were lovers in their past lives in the anime. After reading the manga, though, something struck me. It was noted that back during the Silver Millennium the Three Outer Solar System Soldiers were not allowed to leave their posts. Uranus and Neptune would never be able to see each other then. I highly doubt they'd break such a rule in order to see each other either. They are too dedicated to their duties.

The only times they likely ever knew each other was as children or soldiers in training. Then come the time they could use their powers well, which was likely a very young age since Pluto looked to be a preteen when she took up her duty as the guard of the Time Door. After that, the only time they saw each other face to face was when they were gathered to call the Soldier of Destruction, Saturn.

If love did bloom during that time, it was likely how Princess Serenity watched Prince Endymion from afar on a monitor. After all, in their respective castles the Three Outer Solar System soldiers had computers with large communication monitors. They apparently were able to communicate with each other through that, as seen in the Stars Arc in the manga when they report back to their castles.

I'd like to think if it did exist at that time, Neptune likely watched Uranus from afar. Perhaps she surveyed around the planet Uranus and its moons to keep an eye on her. Like the story in the anime, where Michiru watch Haruka from afar all the time, maybe in the Silver Millennium Neptune did the same with Uranus. If a relationship was ever created, it was obviously a long distance relationship with no physical contact at all during it. They only saw each other through a screen. In anycase, such is never truly addressed.

What is Haruka's Religion?

Could Haruka really be Christian? I never really considered this before, because Christianity is so rare a religion in Japan. The majority follow Shinto. Nevertheless, the anime really seems to hint that she could follow Christian beliefs. She seems to believe in one god rather than many, she displays knowledge of the Bible when she spoke of Adam and Eve, often refers to bearing a cross of her own as a soldier and believes in heaven and hell after death. I don't put a great deal of thought in her tendency to wear a gold cross at times in the anime, because many cultures have been known to wear religious symbols of other countries without a single clue as to what the symbol represents or even means. Still, though, Haruka apparently knows enough.

Where are Uranus, Neptune and Saturn in the Future?

What happened to Uranus, Neptune and Saturn in the future - 30th Century Crystal Tokyo? It is never noted in the manga or anime as to what became of them. In the Black Moon arc, the three of them are never noted or show up. Since they were not created, perhaps not even thought up yet, at that time, I figured it made enough sense.

It was later on in the Stars Arc of the manga did I come to conclude that they either do not exist or have the same sad duties they had in the Silver Millennium. When their Sailor Crystals disappeared with the other soldiers and guardians, it cuts to a scene in Crystal Tokyo. It shows the Guardian Deity Soldiers disappearing. It shows Pluto and Endymion disappearing. It even shows the companion cats disappearing. It never shows anything about Uranus, Neptune or Saturn though.

Therefore, I can only assume four possibilities. One, they were not reborn in the 30th Century. Two, they were reborn but never awakened as soldiers. Three, they awoke, but no longer had the duties they once endured and thus lived peaceful lives... maybe with Haruka and Michiru together raising Hotaru as their own. Four, Uranus and Neptune returned to their castles and resumed their solitary duties of guarding from afar and Saturn would only awaken when the end was necessary. I rather prefer the third theory, but as said, what happens to them is unknown.
