Ouranos: The Greek God of the Heavens

Greek Format: Ουρανος
Roman Format: Cælus
Transliteration: Ouranos
Latin Name: Uranus, Cælum
Translation: Sky, Heaven

Unlike the rest of the Sailor Team of the Solar System, Haruka's representative god was from Greek mythology. He was known as Ouranos, or Uranus in English format, and our seventh planet of the Solar System was christened after him. All the other planets were named after Roman gods and goddesses.

Following Greek mythology, Ouranos was a personification of the sky. He is known to be one of the primeval gods. Primeval gods were the first beings to emerge upon creation. They formed the primary aspects of the universe and the majority could be dubbed elemental gods. They were the Air, Sky, Light, Darkness, Day, Night, Earth, Mountains, Water, Sea, Time, Necessity and Procreation.

While being the sky, he played a great part in the creation of other beings in mythology. Gaia, the personification of Earth, was his wife and together they parented the first generation of Titanes, the Titanides, the Kyklopes and the Hekatonkheires.

Fearful of the power the Kyklopes and the Hekatonkheires posessed, Ouranos imprisoned them within Gaia's womb. This caused Gaia immense pain and seeking the help of the Titanes, a rebellion against Ouranos was put in action. Khronos, never caring for his father, took the job. Given a sickle from her, he ambushed Ouranos when he came to lay with his wife. Using the sickle, he castrated his father. Throwing Ouranos' members to the sea, blood from them spilled upon Gaia. From this blood the Erinyes, the Gigantes and the Meliai were born. From the discarded gentials sea foam formed and a young maiden, Aphrodite, grew from the immortal flesh.

Upon his fall from rule, Ouranos prophesised the fall of the Titanes. It was later determined by he and his wife that Khronos would suffer a similar downfall as did his father. In fear of his impending future, Khronos swallowed every child his wife, Rhea birthed. In her grief, she sought out Ouranos and Gaia for help. They all devised a plan to bring retribution to Ouranos and his grandchildren by managing to save Zeus from his father. Zeus eventually fulfulled Ouranos' prophesy, overthrowing Khronos and becoming the new ruler over immortals and mortals alike.
