Despite none of the Outer Solar System Soldiers appear in the SuperS season, Haruka and Michiru do appear in a SuperS Special. Usagi and Chibiusa wonder what they are up to and soon blush. With semi-uncomfortable semi-naughty expressions they comment together, "Well, knowing those two…" Luna and Artemis catch on with understanding expressions and the screen cuts off to a beautiful picture of the two looking comfortable with each other. (Hard to tell, but Haruka seems to be naked when looking at the visual clues…) All of them comment, "Right!"
Anyone can interpret that scene as they wish, but it seems in the end their feelings towards each other seemed apparent no matter how hard they pushed it aside for their mission. And so begins the special episode called, "The Return of Haruka and Michiru! The Ghostly Puppet Show."
The two are at a fancy hotel by the sea. Michiru is the first to appear, appreciating wine and the provided entertainment in the dining area. She leaves in the middle to return to her quarters to hear a maid comment about Haruka. Haruka has come down with a fever and was resting in bed. While the maid dutifully takes care of her, Haruka sighs and begins to flirt sending the maid into a blushing fit.
Michiru finally breaks up the moment by slamming the door shut as she enters. The maid leaves embarrassed and Haruka is quite surprised as well, stuttering out, "Y-you're back early." She looks pretty guilty as well. Michiru comments she seems a lot better in a bit of an accusing tone, which makes Haruka squirm. Haruka soon changes the subject though. Michiru looks not amused, but replies she senses something dark.
Haruka looks worried and apologizes for getting sick and being troublesome for Michiru. Michiru still glares a bit and comments Haruka wouldn't be troublesome if she stayed put in bed, which of course causes embarrassment and guilt.
Haruka changes the subject again to get Michiru off her tail. She stutters, "S-so, what's this feeling you get?" Michiru still looks at her reprimanding. Eventually seeing Haruka will keep changing the subject she closes her eyes and shakes her head in something that appears to be exasperation. Michiru concedes and says whatever evil she feels is neither the Death Busters nor an invader from outside the Solar System.
Pretty much, if you edit out the Sailor Soldier business, they act like a couple where the girlfriend catches the boyfriend cheating. After all, if there was nothing between them, why would Haruka look so guilty and possibly scared of Michiru's reaction? Why would Michiru look so gracefully jealous and pretty much go after Haruka like a cunning shark? Those who still don't see them as romantically attracted to each other definitely have no capability to read between the lines.
Later on Haruka is attacked. As Sailor Neptune, Michiru comes to her rescue and demands the enemy to let her go. The enemy stops her and threatens that if she attacks, the bottle his puppet is holding will break and cause havoc all over the world. Neptune struggles over this since she is not certain whether he is lying or not. The only two outcomes in that is the possibility of everyone in the world being attacked by their own shadows or Haruka being safe.
Finally, when he moves to take Haruka's energy again, Neptune attacks him with her Deep Submerge. The bottle breaks and nothing happens. The man is stunned and asks how she knew he was lying. Neptune responds with a smile, "Oh, it wasn't true?"
Haruka is released and falls to her bed. Neptune looks at her lovingly while the man is still stupefied. He finally cries out, "You did it to save her? What kind of a heroine are you?" Neptune responds, "Oh, maybe you misunderstood. A world without Haruka isn't worth saving." I guess it goes to show in the end, Michiru didn't hold a grudge against Haruka's previous flirting that night.
If one looks at this in a certain way, I believe it shows that Sailor Moon's ways finally changed Haruka and Michiru's point of views. By choosing to save Haruka over everyone else, it shows she no longer believes sacrifice is necessary. Also, if breaking the bottle did wreak havoc, I think she would still do it because she now believes in Sailor Moon and believes that even if she and Uranus were unable to stop the terror, Sailor Moon would.
Anyway, Haruka finally manages to get up, transforms and decides to pay her enemies back for their treatment to her. Neptune warns Uranus not to be fooled and that the puppet is the source of the power. Uranus, still a bit feverish, but quite lucid, eyes it vindictively. She stares it down and gives signs of threatening, finally sending it on the run and then sends her World Shaking after it. As the puppet is destroyed it cries about not helping the Dead Moon.
Later on, Haruka and Michiru are leaning against her sports car on a cliff by the sea. Michiru asks how she is feeling. Haruka replies better after using so much energy in fighting. Haruka eyes an object in her hand, which Michiru questions about. It is a piece of the puppet they destroyed and Haruka murmurs question about it being a new enemy.
Michiru tells her not to worry and comments, "… they'll take care of the world." Haruka looks at her with understanding and smiles in a sort of relief. She closes her eyes and agrees, "You're right. They'll take care of it." The picture changes to a group shot of Sailor Moon and company.
As said earlier, this episode is anything shows that Haruka and Michiru do believe in Sailor Moon finally. They know their Princess and her guardian soldiers are capable of fighting off threats to the world. Therefore, this time they do nothing, for their duty is only to go after outside invaders. Therefore, those who think they do not respect Sailor Moon or the Guardian Deity Soldiers likely have not seen this episode.
I'd say this special cleared up a lot of things. Haruka and Michiru do love each other, how much is uncertain, and that they now respect and believe in the other soldiers.
