Cover Profession

I never really questioned such before, but from watching the show a bit and stumbling on anti-character sites, I wondered... why the heck is Trowa a clown of all things when with the circus? He is acrobatic and a natural "tamer" of lions. Why in the world did the creators of the show have him take the job of a clown for his cover? Even in Endless Waltz, he kept the half mask on for his performances when his attire was that of a lion tamer.

On brief thoughts, I figured it was the only job they could think to give him. He needed to learn the ropes and find a niche. Well, looking back, he didn't necessarily have to be a performer. He could have looked after the animals. He could have been one of the workers who put up and tear down the big top between traveling. All sorts of other jobs were possible.

If he had to be a performer, he could have gotten a better outfit. He wasn't a performer who went for laughs or did side acts. He assisted in main acts. I mean, Catherine was a knife thrower and had a more flattering little number.

Then it hit me. There was the anonymity. With the mask and his hair covering most of his face, there is less chance of him being recognized. Yes, even with that hair. A part of me wonders if his ability to blend into organizations and his unmistakable hair style were not a sort of ironic joke being played. The mask is used instead of makeup because it is practical for his disappearing and reappearing acts. Who has time to place on makeup with you arrive just in time to change clothes and hit the stage in five minutes?

So... why does he still play the role after the TV series? I figure he got used to it and even with his hair people likely wouldn't recognize him as the rising circus star he was becoming. That and he likely came to enjoy being able to take on a role that was "opposite" of his nature. He's a caring guy. A clown is stereotyped to be a "bringer of joy". While most of his life he had to fight, kill and face reality, on the stage he could rectify his doings just a little and for a moment pretend to be something different.

That is my theory anyway. Well, that and I can see him probably being a bit self-depricating. It fits his character.
