New Mobile Report Gundam Wing takes place in the alternate universe timeline After Colony. The series is loosely based on the first Gundam series and is thus not considered an original story in itself. Many fans of the UC Gundam series notice similarities in events and character roles that appear in Gundam Wing to earlier Gundam series. Basically, Gundam Wing is a more modern and less complex take on the original series to fit the changing times.
The series begins in the year After Colony 195. By this time man has colonized space. Earth is orbited by Colonies that are clustered in the five Earth-Moon Lagrange points in space. The Colonies, however, are oppressed greatly by Earth, where the nations have united as the United Earth Sphere Alliance. The Alliance uses Mobile Suits to control the populace.
The Colonies, however, are peaceful. Twenty years earlier they tried to find a resolution to the situation by the leadership of a political pacifist known as Heero Yuy. Instead, Heero Yuy was assassinated which in turn led five scientists who were once members of the Alliance's Mobile Suit development team to disband and flee after finishing a Mobile Suit called Tallgeese.
Now that twenty years have passed, the scientists are ready to seek revenge against the Alliance and OZ, a military organization for the Alliance. The plan is called "Operation Meteor" which was first focused on dropping a Colony on Earth and sending the Gundams to take control over Earth while it was in a state of chaos. The scientists and the pilots, however, took matters into their own hands and made the operation into guerilla war against the Alliance military instead.
The show in turn follows the war from beginning to end and how one's actions affects and changes others.
