Battlefield of Pacifists

The manga after Shin Kidou Senki Gundam W is the single volume Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists. Out of the manga written to take place in between the television series and Endless Waltz this one is generally considered official due to being by members of the show's writing staff.

In this side manga, Heero asks Duo if Trowa and Quatre are doing okay in Issue One. Interestingly Duo responds in surprise,

"What?! Oh, those guys..."

He looks stunned and has a sweat drop on his right temple. Heero asks,

"Who else?"

Heero asks Duo who he thought he was talking about. Duo says never mind as though to change the subject.

Some might see slight indication there. Why did Duo seem so shocked that Heero asked about them? Why did he emphasize on being questioned about the both of them as though they are different? It is speculatory, but his surprise and the vague feeling of nervousness gives question to the possibility he thinks that something is going on between Trowa and Quatre that is beyond friendship and he doesn't want to think of it.

Still, later on Trowa and Quatre are together on L3, seen on page 22. While this proves nothing of a romantic relationship, it can prove friendship and comradeship at the most. Trowa seems most in sync and at peace when working with Quatre. If not romantic, they certainly like each other as friends.

His gentle demeanor when it comes to Quatre is still displayed when it comes to this manga and he is still quietly protective. Perfect Peace People activists arrive outside the launch where Quatre and Trowa stand alone. Quatre seems a bit bothered by them, seeming not to know whether to be concerned about how far they will go or not. Trowa gives reassurance to Quatre and the other's face quickly brightens. They then exchange farewells. As Trowa watches Quatre leave, he tells him to take care and the faintest of smiles graces his lips. Trowa looks very gentle.

Trowa's protectiveness there could also be seen as a caring, almost brotherly affection to Quatre and his wellbeing. Either way, they reassure and support each other.

Later in Issue Two, page five, Trowa goes to a phone booth, but before he starts dialing, there shows a sort of shock go through him. His eyes widen when it happens. It indicates he had to have felt something. He then dials and find Quatre has left no reports. At the same time, Quatre has been taken captive after encountering Virgo Mobile Dolls.

Again, like in the anime, such a scene makes one wonder if Trowa has a sort of empathetic connection with Quatre because at that time Quatre is in distress. Did Trowa feel it right before he picked up the phone? Who knows? In any case, it worries Trowa enough that he goes out to look for him and he gives note to Duo about Quatre's lack of returning.

When Quatre does appear again he is like a machine and is obviously, to the reader at least, brainwashed. He ends up attacking Trowa and like how he responds in the anime, Trowa can only be at loss. This time it is Duo who comes to his rescue. It seems like Trowa can never find it in himself to fight Quatre. Instead Duo subdues Quatre, Trowa helps after this occurs, opens his cockpit and enters Sandrock to try to snap Quatre out of it.

After their encounter, while Quatre doesn't snap out of it, he does pause. His head is causing him issues now. In the end it is found that Quatre was filled with Alkaloid and other hallucinogens. He likely was hypnotized as well. Duo questions about who did such things to Quatre. Trowa simply wants to know if Quatre can be cured.

Sally Po tries to neutralize the chemicals and says the rest is up to Quatre. Trowa responds with certainty that Quatre can do it.

"He's strong willed. That's why he has such a good heart."

With that he dabs a cloth on Quatre's sweaty brow. If anything, Trowa's belief in Quatre and affection is shown.

Later on Quatre is indeed fighting the drugs. Hearing the voice of the one who captured him, Gainz the leader of the Perfect Peace People group, Quatre begins to struggle in his unconscious state and shows distress. Duo is concerned and asks if Quatre's okay. Trowa is calm. He doesn't need to ask. He tells Duo Quatre is fighting himself right then. Trowa's belief and trust in the other is confirmed.

By the fourth chapter, Quatre fights his way through and gains consciousness. Now that Quatre can be spoken with, Trowa asks Quatre if he is okay. Quatre confirms he is okay but apologizes for his actions. Duo tells him it wasn't his fault. Trowa places his hands on Quatre's shoulders comfortingly and tells him not to worry.

Again, Trowa has a tendency to show affection and concern through actions and words when it comes to the other.

When it comes to how he and Quatre are in Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists, it is very much like how they are in the anime. They are obviously close, but there is no proof as to how close they are. Also, Battlefield of Pacifists displays only possible events that could have occurred in between the TV series and the OVAs/Movie Endless Waltz.
