Endless Waltz

Finally, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz comes along. Accompanying the movie version of Endless Waltz, it is separated into a prologue followed by five chapters.

Trowa first appears in chapter one, "Mariemaia Barton" on page twenty. He is at the circus with Catherine, looking into the tent. Catherine notes her feelings about the lacking crowd and questions where everyone must be. Trowa tells her, "People have other things to entertain them." He then indicates a group of suspicious looking men in suits. While Catherine wonders who they are, Trowa abruptly leaves, telling her he's going to find out. She turns to only find his mask on the ground.

Away from the tents, Trowa takes out the men and finds out what information he can. The men come from The Barton Foundation. Trowa seems to know about it and a memory surfaces. Determining the situation, Trowa abruptly leaves the circus, without a word to anyone.

Nothing can really be concluded from this scene. Die-hard believers in their being siblings would likely say this gives proof that Trowa doesn't feel anything for Catherine since he didn't bother to say farewell to her. That is a possibility.

It could simply be how Trowa works. He always leaves without word and whenever Catherine catches up with him, she tells him how she dislikes him fighting, but she knows not even she can stop him. He will always go.

Fans of the couple - romantic, sibling or friends - would likely see it as silent understanding between the two. Trowa has always left without a word and Catherine has come to understand by now that once he leaves there is no point in trying to stop him. That would explain why she didn't follow. The drop of the mask seems like his version of "tying one's hair back before heading for a fight".

One might say they understand that saying goodbye would be useless and just cause more pain. Trowa doesn't say goodbye because he doesn't intend to be gone forever and to avoid the arguments of not going. Catherine doesn't chase after him this time because his discarding his mask spoke in volumes to her. She understood he went into soldier mode and would likely head off again. All she can do is wait for his return.

In any case, this scene can be viewed in two extremes of the spectrum. Whether there is nonchalant feelings or there is deep trust and understanding between them, it isn't specified. So romance? Nothing is really found here.

In chapter three "Operation Meteor" Trowa, Heero and Duo are in the control room of L3's X-18999 colony on page 101. The colony is going to be used to complete the original plan of Operation Meteor of dropping an entire Colony on Earth and take over the planet during the chaos. The three of them do their best to stabilize the colony. As they work, Trowa says,

"There are 9000 people in the Colony, including my friends, who could all die from Operation Meteor."

In this, it shows he is thinking of the people at the circus. In this thought Catherine and the Ringmaster are shown. He thinks determinedly that he won't let such happen. If one wishes to, a person could read between the lines and say that Trowa thought of Catherine because she is his beloved and the Ringmaster because he is like a father to him. Still, there is no indication to his feelings regarding them other than their being his friends.

Another thing that could be deduced from the picture is that he sees Catherine as a sister and the Ringmaster like a father. Again, nothing is supported. His feelings could be either of those scenarios, or as stated, he could simply see them as only friends. In any case, they are important to him.

Trowa's last appearance is on page 196 of chapter five "Last Battle for Peace". Pages 196 and 197 together shows a montage of what all the main characters are doing now that the war is over. People who like to partner characters together would see many possible candidates. Duo is with Hilde at the junk yard, Trowa is with Catherine performing at the circus, Wufei and Sally are working together at the Preventers, Zechs and Noin are heading to Mars and Heero is next to Relena.

Many would consider this proof of certain couples existing, but none of the scenes show actual romance between the characters. In all the scenes, minus the one of Une and Mariemaia, they are all simply working jobs together.

In Trowa and Catherine's scene, as usual, this seems to be read as him considering the circus his home and Catherine as a very important person to him in regards to an unbiased, surface view. With others it could show he returned to his true love or that he will always remain with the circus because those there are his friends and family.

Overall, it is all up to the reader's point of view on whether there is anything going on in Endless Waltz, but without looking too deeply into it for "hints", there seems to be no indication to how he and Catherine really see and feel about one another other than that there is definite fondness.
