Gundam W Endless Waltz Book Two Pages 43-53

This is an excerpt I translated from New Mobile Suit Report Gundam W Endless Waltz (Magazine Novels Special) by Katsuyuki Sumizawa. It was released in the form of two books. The second book was released on July 23, 1997. Please keep in mind that I am not an expert in translating, therefore some areas may be lacking.

Pages 43-53

XXXG-01H 《Gundam Heavy Arms》 was developed in the colonies of the L-3 group, which can be said to be the stronghold of the Barton Foundation.

42

The pilot was Trowa Barton, the son of Dekim's mistress. This physical man was not loved by his father much due to his mediocrity. Despite being in a position that should have made him the heir of the Barton Foundation, he took pride in being a solder dedicated to conquering Earth. For Dekim, his beloved were Leia, the daughter of his legitimate wife, and Mariemaia who inherited the noble blood of the Kushrenada family.
However, Trowa Barton had a stronger blood link to Dekim than anyone else, along with a combative personality and an overwhelming desire to dominate. Naturally, he was highly motivated by the original Operation Meteor. On the other hand, no one among the workers, including Doktor S, who was in charge of developing Heavy Arms, was optimistic about this operation, and many voiced their objections.
Among them, only the mechanic boy known as "No-name" neither denied nor affirmed anything. Trowa Barton considered "No-name" as an ally and interacted with him amicably. Perhaps it was that silence which made him even more worthy of trust. He even showed him a photo of his niece, Mariemaia. However, "No-name" continued to assemble and fine-tune the Heavy Arms parts quietly, as if completely unaware of the gesture.

43

The nameless boy was on Earth before becoming a mechanic. He was part of a mercenary unit from a young age, moving from battlefield to battlefield as a soldier all over Earth. Surprisingly, he had been piloting mobile Suits since he was ten years old, and his skills greatly surpassed those of other mercenaries. This skill helped him move around various locations. No matter where he went, he would never run out of work as a Mobile Suit pilot.
During his travels, he had been searching for where his true home was. He believed surely that there must be a place for him to return to. It felt more like a conviction or belief. It remains unclear why he was so attached to finding a "place to return to" but it seems that his continued refusal to embrace being a warrior, despite being such an exceptional one, is due to this longing for home.
When he finally arrives at his place to return to, he will likely be able to remove the mask of a soldier. This aspect shares a commonality with Zechs Merquise, who actually wears a mask. In Zechs' case, he wears a mask to deny the loss of his 'place to return to,' while the "No-name" seeks a "place to return to" in order to remove the false mask he wears. One adopts various names, while the other has had no name from the start.

44

Moreover, "No-name" would not hesitate to don the mask of a warrior if he were to find a place to return to, in order to protect it. In the end, "No-name" was unable to find a place to return to on Earth. And so, he set off into space.
He loved the stars. He wanted to see those stars up close. However, there were no battlefields in space that would employ him. The only job he finally found was as a mechanic for Gundanium mobile Suits in a secret factory. Surprisingly, "No-name" realized that this was an ideal workplace.
(Perhaps this is the place I can return to...)
It felt so natural that, strangely enough, the atmosphere of this place became familiar to his body.

45

He was also interested in a Mobile Suit called 《Heavy Arms》. He was captivated by its unique performance, which was unlike any other machine he had encountered.
In order to make adjustments, he climbed into the cockpit many times, and the stifling space that spread out around him, along with the chaotic future that laid ahead, gave him the illusion that it was all prepared just for him. And before he knew it, "No-name" began to hold conversations in his mind with Heavy Arms.
(How is it... how are you feeling today?)
(The magnetic coating in the drive system should improve the response speed a bit...)
(You are like me. Quiet, obedient, and with no future...)
(No, you do have a name...)
It was nothing more than a one-sided conversation, but for "No-name", Heavy Arms was his only conversation partner. As a result, he had no conversations with other mechanics, making him even more silent. The "No-name" continued to work silently without exchanging words with anyone. His strong attachment towards 《Gundams》 was later proven when he unconsciously shed tears after destroying the 《Gundam Deathscythe》.
However, such an expression suited him very well.

46

On that day, "No-name" was alone still continuing maintenance on Heavy Arms. It was his usual behavior. At that moment, there was a presence of someone at the foot of this machine.
"What's this all about?"
The one shouting was Trowa Barton.
"Why are we limiting all our attack to 'OZ'?"
Standing in front of him were Dr. S, the head of the Heavy Arms development, and his assistant.
"If we proceeded with Operation Meteor two billion people will die... Don't you think this is going too far for revenge for Heero Yuy?"
"The purpose of this plan is not revenge... The plan is for the colonies to conquer Earth for the awakening of a new mankind!"
Trowa Barton spoke of the superficial intent of this operation. However, if this operation were to be executed, would true awakening of humanity really occur? If the world descends into chaos, it is possible that a certain privileged elite would seize control over the sphere of Earth.
Probably, it would be the people from the Romefeller Foundation or the Barton Foundation, who possess overwhelming economic power, that would assume that position. Furthermore, Trowa Barton's father, Dekim, holds the trump card of having the only daughter of Treize Khushrenada, the next representative of the Romefeller Foundation.

47

In other words, the only ones who benefit from this operation are not the residents of the colony, but rather just a small part of them, the Barton family.
"That sounds like something Dekim of the Barton Foundation would dream up..."
Doktor S said, showing his disgust.
"I see... You guys have something against that?" Trowa Barton sneered with a twisted mouth. "You're jealous that my father and the Barton Foundation will rule the Earth Sphere..."
Ordinary people assume that others think the same way they do. In this case, Troi Barton concluded that the root of Doktor S's intentions was jealousy. He never once thought that he would feel guilty about the mass murder of two billion humans on Earth. He probably considered limiting the attack target to "0Z" merely as a way to obstruct the collaboration between the Barton Foundation and the Romefeller Foundation.
Therefore, there was carelessness. He turned his back on Doktor S and the assistant without a second thought.
"Where are you going, Trowa?"
"To tell this to my father..."
The assistant couldn't tolerate that simple-minded thought.

48

It didn't change the fact that he was against dropping the colony on Earth, even if it was reported to Dekim.

Putting the thoughts of others into the trivial category of oneself and reporting to the father without any serious discussion was no different from the behavior of an elementary school child.
How can this level of thinking ability awaken the humans on Earth?
Even for a moment, he felt sorry for himself for listening to such a man's words properly.
Trowa Barton glanced around and spat out a discarded line.
"Just watch me... I'll proceed with Operation Meteor by myself, if I must..."
Those were his last words.
The assistant shot the stupid man in the heart from behind.
If he just wanted to stop Operation Meteor, he wouldn't have to kill him.
However, there was pure hatred in the assistant.
Watching Troy Burton collapse in slow motion, the assistant trebled with the fear of killing someone for the first time.
"Now you've done it..."
The assistant slumped his shoulders in disappointment and managed to string together some words.
"I'm sorry... but I have family on Earth..."
"No-name" had witnessed the entire scene.

49

It was not an unusual murder scene for him, but it was painful to see a human trembling with guilt. From a tactical perspective, or rather, from the standpoint of all humanity, there is no doubt that by killing that one man, he became a great contributor to saving the lives of two billion people. Therefore, there should be no reason to feel guilty.
He was a man capable of such a detached viewpoint, but he also had a kind-hearted side that couldn't overlook those who were in a position they didn't desire and lacked the resolve.
"No-name" decided to make his presence known. He dropped a nearby wrench on the floor. A distinct metallic sound echoed throughout the workshop.
"Who's there?"
"No-name" raised both hands and stepped in front of Doktor S and the assistant. By indicating his presence first, there was no worry of being shot suddenly. "No-name" spoke in a slow tone.
"I have no name... If you like, call me 'No-name'..."
The assistant aimed a handgun at "No-name". His hands were trembling uncontrollably.

"No-name" approached calmly.
"I'll understand if you want to kill me. But I might struggle a little..."
He had already determined that he wouldn't be able to shoot.
"Don't..." Doktor S had his assistant lower the gun.
"They'll find out about this sooner or later... There's no use trying to hide the facts."
"Hmph... You're giving up too easily..."
"What?"
"No-name" had already thought of a way to handle this situation.
(With this method, we might be able to deceive those from the Barton Foundation for a while...)
Maintaining an unfazed expression, he lowered his hands slowly.
"I was feeling insecure without a name..."
That wasn't true. He had never been troubled by not having a name since he was born.
"I wouldn't mind taking on his name..."
"What are you talking about?" the assistant asked.

52

"No-name" murmured while looking up at the Heavy Arms beside him.
"I seem best suited for the battlefields...." He spoke of a fate he did not want to accept in his heart.
Doctor S followed "No-name" gaze and began to understand his intentions.
"Are you saying you'll pilot this suit, Heavy Arms?"
"I'm fond of this machine... But I have no interest in conquering Earth."
Doctor S stared intently at the face of "No-name". There was no hesitation in his eyes.
(I see... so you're willing to take on this insane era.) (Even though you are largely unrelated...)
Doktor S softened his expression and said, "Alright... As of this moment, your name is Trowa Barton... You are now in charge of Operation Meteor."
"Understood..." He replied with clear eyes, no longer "No-name."
The boy who calls himself "Trowa Barton" and the Gundam Heavyarms headed towards Earth. The target of the attack was a spaceport located in the English Channel of Europe, a target that had been decided in advance.

53

That place was under the control of "0Z."
