Okawara Kunio Gundam Design Works

Okawara Kunio Gundam Design Works, a rather hard to obtain art book, was release by Movic in 1999. Okawara Kunio (大河原 邦男) is the mechanical designer of the First Gundam anime series, thus the book contains line arts from that. It also contains many mechanical designs for later Gundam series. Early design concepts of Gundam Wing's Mecha are on pages 96 to 107. Heavy Arms information is on page 100.

EXPLANATION

Design Explanation
In addition to concepts such as America and fire, Gundam Heavyarms also incorporated the image of a circus, as the pilot was a clown.
However, the circus image was only present in the initial draft, and from then on, the design progressed with the image of heavy weapons symbolizing the US military, with weapons being equipped throughout the machine.
The red-based body color is also thought to come from the image of fire and firearms.

Okawara's Comments
The first draft design was rushed through with only the part about a clown piloting it. In the end, the clown and circus imagery were dropped, and the design was developed with the aim of emphasizing the American Army by adding lots of Gatling guns and missiles. The goal was to create a Mobile Suit capable of unleashing an overwhelming barrage of firepower that would keep enemies at bay.
